The store doesn't use gas to make deliveries - the owner has a trailer for his bike and has used it to deliver up to 12 boxed bicycles at a time. The shop also keeps Louisville on the map as one of the few smaller cities with bike couriers.

Brad moves a tree from the bailer, which wraps them in twine, to a machine that drills a hole in the trunk that allows them to work with a special tree stand.

Brad laughs as he grabs the top of a "Charlie Brown" tree that is too small to fit in the drilling machine properly. Although "Charlie Browns" are the smallest, scrawniest trees on the lot, at prices under $5 they are one of the best sellers.

Euthanasia

The project I am working on with Animal Services is centered around the euthanasia of healthy animals, and why city pounds are forced into this awful position.

This is Scooter.

Scooter was turned over to Rochester Animal Services because his owners couldn't handle it when he peed in the house. Thousands of animals like Scooter go through Animal Services every year, but because of severe space issues and a lack of interest in adoption, many will never leave.

I finally started working on my Animal Services project. I'm going out with Animal Control officers on their duties in Rochester and documenting what they do using still photography and audio. One part of the job is vaccinating and impounding animals that come in.

"Gucci," an abandoned puppy brought in by officer Denise Lybrand, about to receive an oral vaccine. Healthy incoming animals are held in case someone comes to claim them, but most go unclaimed. Identified animals are held for ten days; unidentified animals are held for five.

Space and financial constraints mean that most of the animals that aren't claimed are euthanized. The shelter has a policy against adopting out Pit Bulls, and these make up the vast majority of dogs that come in. These and any dogs that don't pass the test to be adoptable are euthanized, and even some that go up for adoption are ultimately euthanized because of a lack of interest.

The Genesee Valley Hunt Races are a series of family and sporting events that take place on the second Saturday of October each year. Centered around the Genesee Valley Hunt Cup, a serious horse race with a large cash prize, the festivities include less serious horse races, dog races, kids' races, and tailgating competitions.

Anthony is a rapper who works at the Lux Lounge in Rochester, NY. I am working on a project about him along with Casey Staff, Maria Sikic, and Janet Zimmerman for a multimedia class we are taking.

Today, we met Anthony, took a few photos, and began to interview him.

Anthony playing a banjo he bought recently. He plans to try to incorporate it into his music.

Even the tattoos Anthony knows were a mistake are a big part of who he is. Here, he shows us the star tattoos he got with ballpoint pen ink when he was 14.

9/11 in New York City

Michael Conti and I drove down to New York City from RIT on Friday the 10th to cover September 11th protests around ground zero.

We got to our "hotel" at about 3am.

As it turns out, $48 per night gets you a closet in chinatown.

There were several groups of protestors the next day. The first ones I came across were 9/11 "truthers."

The largest rally of the day was organized those that oppose the group that plans to build n Islamic Center at Ground Zero. They also sparked a counter-protest several blocks away that attracted around 1,900 people. Police were mainly monitoring the roads between the two groups to make sure they wouldn't combine. While a handful of members of opposing groups did show up to the other protest to spark arguments, both rallies were largely uneventful.

One man left the counter-protest and entered the cordoned area for the anti-mosque crowd. He walked around saying "Allah Akbar," and was immediately became a huge source of controversy. While one man repeatedly screamed "Fuck Islam, Fuck Towelheads," most others were more civil. The majority recognized that he was attempting to spark controversy and simply told those around themselves to ignore him, but were also willing to engage in heated arguments.

Within a few minutes, a police officer grabbed his arm and led him out to cries of support from surrounding rallyers.

A different group of people tried to stage a counter-protest in the middle of the crowd as well. They were also led out by police officers, but on the way a man snatched and broke one of their signs, and a woman grabbed one of their sticks and broke it. In both instances the surrounding police officers were able to keep the counter-protestors safe, but only under threat of assualt charges against both parties.

The woman responsible for attacking the counter-protestors rejects the NYPD's attempts to stifle her. "My family died in the 9/11 attacks. They don't understand what I'm going through."

She refused to be identified by name.

The majority of people in the anti-mosque rally were undisturbed by the counter-protestors. The two groups were kept far enough apart that there was very little mixing of conflicting ideas.

One of the favorites of the anti-mosque crowd was a man wearing a fake beard and a turban with a fake bomb in the top. He refused to identify himself as anything other an "a concerned citizen." He said his reason for being there was to show people that the United States has nothing to fear from Islam.

One man was roaming the crowd with a Qu'ran that he offered pages from. He advertised it as the nicest toilet paper money can buy. Members of the crowd were encouraged to take sheets, tear them up, and show them to people.

Several men from a church in Florida came up with a cross. They both lived in the city, and the man in the foreground was a part of FDNY on 9/11. They were here to promote tolerance. Though they thought the decision to build a mosque near ground zero was "ill-informed," they did not disagree with it. They were more concerned that the country is fractured over the issue.

"There was no crime in the city for 4 months following the attack. Why did it take such a tragedy to bring us together?"

Early on Tuesday, April 20th RIT Sophomore Cy Dickey discovered that both of his car's back tires had been stolen from K-lot and replaced with pieces of wood.

Over the course of the morning, Dickey spent more than 3 hours on the phone with Campus Security, his insurance company, a local Nissan dealership, and his dad.

The theft occurred the previous night and was recorded by a security camera across the street on the corner of Nathaniel Rochester Hall. RIT Public Safety was able to identify the student responsible, a 4th year Engineering major, who is now facing three-year academic suspension.

"[The thief] emailed me thinking he could just give the wheels back and I'd drop the charges," says Dickey. "I told him no way. I paid over a grand to get a tow and some new wheels; giving back the old ones doesn't help at all."

After learning that the combined costs for replacement, installation, and towing would run about $1400, Cy Dickey gestures angrily at the thief's handiwork. "What kind of asshole would do this?"

Here's where I talk about cameras

Canon vs Nikon, in a nutshell. Ha.

In 1987, Canon ditched the FD mount in favor of the new EF mount. This put them worlds ahead of Nikon in terms of autofocus - Canon's new mount relied on an autofocus engine in the lens body rather than the camera body. This allowed much faster focus. To this day, many Nikkor lenses use the in-camera motor. This results in slower, louder autofocus, though some claim it is more accurate.

Many Nikon fanatics say Nikon made the right choice because you can mount any older Nikon lens on a new Nikon camera. BUT, this really doesn't matter for working professionals who need autofocus. The Canon FD mount was manual focus only anyway, so Canon's switch means that Canon has more autofocus lenses available for their cameras, even if Nikon has more total lenses available. Additionally, Canon's AF lenses from the late 80s and all of the 90s are faster because they use in-lens AF motors.

The impact this has today is with the Nikon system, pro cameras (D300, D700, D3, D3s, D3x) can use all of the lenses, but amateur bodies like the D5000 have a severely limited choice of AF lenses. These cameras don't have the screw that drives autofocus on many of the Nikon lenses, and Nikon has a comparatively small selection of lenses with in-lens autofocus.

What Canon is doing wrong today is creating cameras with too many megapixels. The 1D Mark IV vs D3s example is a good one. The 1D IV has superior image quality up until ISO 1600 or 3200, but many pros are willing to forgo that for the D3s because it absolutely smashes the 1d IV in low light shooting.

Even more frustrating is Canon's refusal to get into the game of building a fast full frame camera, and they got into the full-frame business 4 years before Nikon. The best Canon has is the 1Ds III, at just 5 frames per second. Canon professionals like Al Bello are forced to use the D3 for ultra-wide, 14mm action shoots. Because of its great autofocus and blazing 9fps at full-frame, the D3 tends to be the photojournalism camera of choice.

In lower model cameras, Nikon takes the cake for build quality and features. While Canon's 5d Mark II and 50D have abysmal autofocus, the D700 and D300 have the same number of focus points as the D3 and D3x. They even have the same tracking, albeit at a slower AF rate, and both are capable of 8fps with the battery grip attached. These are not your classic amateur camera. Also, Nikon bodies are all weather-sealed - Canon only does this in the pro lineup.

Canon has come back a little with the 7D - finally we have an "amateur" camera that is weather-sealed and shoots 8fps. The problem is the 18mp APS-C sensor - cameras several generations back (5d, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II, 1D Mark III) all perform better than it in low light. The same is seen with the 50D - the 40D, 30D, and 20D have sensors that perform better in low light.

Now, we can discuss the good things Canon does. The first is that they make their own sensors (Nikon uses Sony CMOS sensors - believe it or not, the D3X and A900 share the same imaging sensor). As a result, Canon produces images with finer detail and better color accuracy. The older 5D actually produces sharper images than the state-of-the-art Nikon D700, D3, and D3s. This can be seen in Ken Rockwell's test, and he is a known Nikon fan. Though I would take any of the Nikons over the 5D because of their other features, the image quality produced by a camera outdated by 3 years must be recognized.

This is also noticeable in Canon's older models. The 1Ds released in 2003 tells the story - the image quality at ISO 100-400 is barely different than Nikon's 2007 cameras (D3 and D700). While comparing it to cameras with smaller sensors isn't fair, it is interesting to note that the 1ds beats the IQ of the far newer D300. Additionally, the Canon 1D Mark II and 1Ds Mark II are still great cameras. The 1Ds Mark II has better image quality than anything from Nikon except the D3x, and the 1D II beats the much newer D300 in terms of noise and autofocus speed, though not by much. The appeal of these is price - the 1D II comes in at under $600 (heavily used), and the 1Ds II is around $2000.

Nikon is doing exactly the right thing in terms of the feature-set of their bodies. They delivered the D700 with nearly the same specifications as the D3, and still sold millions of the D3 because they knew it was a great camera. Canon seems scared to put real features into their lower-end cameras as if they might defeat their high-end. Nikon just needs find a way to produce sensors of the same caliber as Canon. I'm convinced that if Canon made a modern 12mp full-frame sensor, it would blow the modern Nikon (Sony) ones out of the water. I base this on the superiority of the original 5d over the far newer D700 and D3.

What Nikon has done is hammer in the idea that megapixels are not king, and image quality goes beyond resolution. The D700 is a great camera to go to for those who have had enough of the 5D Mark II's AF system, and the resolution difference isn't important at all.

Canon's genius was the release of the 5D Mark II. As much as I complain about the amateur autofocus and poor build quality, I recognize that Canon skimped on features so they could keep the price low on a full-frame camera with a 21mp sensor. At nearly 1/3 the price, the 5D Mark II produces images almost identical to the D3x, and it does so with a tiny body and much more useable menu and review speed. Also, Nikon does not come close in terms of video. BUT Canon needs to get their act together and make a fast full-frame camera. 35mm is a photojournalism format. Forget megapixels. Give us a 16mp full-frame sensor in the 7d body. Bump it to the 45 af point system from the 1ds mark III, give it a $4500 price tag, and I promise it will become the most popular DSLR in a month.

Over all, the best thing is to weigh the choices carefully, and if you have the luxury shoot both like Al Bello.

Because of the spectacular Rochester Institute of Technology equipment rental cage, I have said luxury. I don't really cast in with either company, because I can see the benefits of both. I find it immensely frustrating when people come up to me intent upon starting a Nikon vs Canon argument, so I tape off the labels on my camera.

(There are other reasons as well, but I wanted an excuse to show off this picture)

Because I see Canon's mistakes as easier fixes than Nikon's, for now I will stick to them. They are the larger company, they make everything themselves, and they appear to be on the right track feature-wise with the 7d. In the end, both companies suck, and both companies are great.

March 4th Protest Against Rochester Mayoral Control

On March 4th, 2010, the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) sponsored a protest against mayoral control of the school board in Rochester, NY.

Several weeks prior, Rochester Mayor Robert J. Duffy announced his plan to get rid of school board elections in favor of appointment because he felt that much-needed changes were not happening rapidly enough under the old system of elections. His position was that change can happen much more rapidly when the board chosen by polling.

I really wanted to go out shooting to clear my mind after class got out at 10, so I grabbed my camera and left. I was just driving around shooting buildings when flashing lights appeared behind me.

After a few minutes on the side of the road, the officer approached the car and asked to see my license and registration.

Cop: License and registration please.

Me: What did you pull me over for, officer?

Cop: License and registration, Please. I'll tell you after.

He took my license and registration, told me my headlight was out, and asked me a series of questions.

(Have you been drinking? No. Where are you coming from? School. Where are you going? Nowhere in particular. Is this vehicle insured? Yup. In whose name is the vehicle registered? My dad. etc etc etc)

Cop: "What are you up to tonight?"

Me: "Shooting."

Cop: "Excuse me?"

Me: "Ah. Sorry. Photography" (I gestured at my camera).

Cop: "Shooting what?"

Me: "Everything. I don't know. Anything."

Cop: "I'd like to search the vehicle."

Me: "No, sir."

Cop: "Why not? Do you have something to hide?"

Me: "No. I don't consent to searches."

He took my license and registration and went back to his car for ten minutes, and came back with a ticket for the headlight (wonderful). He really didn't seem happy that I wouldn't let him search the car, though, and threatened a DUI test. My roommate said he was mad because I was being "uncooperative." I'm pretty sure I was just using my rights.

I continued shooting. At some point around 11:30 I pulled into the Xerox parking lot and started driving through slowly.

A silver pontiac started following me. After a few minutes, I got a little worried. I pulled up to an in-lot stop sign, and the pontiac quickly pulled up next to me and rolled down his window. I paused, decided I'd see what was up, and rolled mine down too.

Pontiac: "Whatcha up to tonight?"

Me: "Nothing much."

P: "Just driving around?"

Me: "Yup."

P: "Are you a Xerox employee?"

Me: "No."

P: "Then you can't be here."

Me: "In the parking lot? Why's that?"

P: "Because it's private property."

Me: "So I can't drive around... in a parking lot?"

P: "Nope."

Me: "........ right."

I just drove away. He started to say something, but I didn't really want to hear him threaten me with the cops. There wasn't anything there to make arguing worth it. He followed me out of the lot, talking on a cell phone.

Why does everyone have to be suspicious of anybody without an immediately obvious purpose or designated location? It's come to the point where I'm stopped more often then I'm not while taking pictures in the city. I'm not particularly excited to see what the future has in store for photography. What happened tonight was really not a big deal, but it was a little frustrating.

In my reactive mind, it mirrors what's going on in the UK (photographers getting arrested for photographing "terrorist targets").

I'm not ready to apply for my license to own a camera.

Accident at the intersection of Jefferson and East River Rd. A truck (F-250?) hit this car in the middle. One of the two probably ran a red light. The bar between the front and back doors ended up farther inside the the car than the passenger seat.

I shot several hundred average exposures of average snowboarders and skiers doing average tricks. There's not much one can accomplish on a 5-foot jump.

Then I realized I should be pointing my camera at the crazy photographers laying in the snow underneath said jump. I think these turned out much more interesting.
